THE METHOD BEHIND TÉR
Most people will never need this page. It is here for the ones who want to know whether there is anything real under an AI that claims to coach.
01 THE SHORT ANSWER
Tér is built on constructive-developmental theory, the body of adult development research associated with Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey at Harvard.
Zsolt Tököli, who built Tér, began working with the method in 2010 and completed a two-year coach certification with Kegan and Lahey in 2012, run by Minds at Work, the practice they founded. He has been using it with senior leaders in Europe and Asia for fifteen years since.
The method is not an app feature. It arrived fifteen years earlier.
02 WHAT THE TRADITION ACTUALLY CLAIMS
Adults keep developing, and most development support quietly assumes they do not. Ordinary training adds things: skills, models, habits, a new framework for the quarterly review. Useful, and often enough.
Constructive-developmental work goes at something else. What you treat as fact rather than opinion. Which loyalties you are protecting without noticing. What you would have to stop being right about for the obvious answer to become available.
That is why the same engine serves a decision and a coaching arc. A hard decision is almost never a shortage of information. It is a clarity problem wearing a suit.
03 WHAT IT MEANS INSIDE THE APP
The same engine runs two very different conversations. One helps you decide something this week. The other works on how you see, over months.
Before anything else, Tér works out how large your decision actually is, because most of us get this wrong in both directions. A small call gets cut short on purpose. A large one gets the time it deserves. You never see this happening. You only notice that the conversation feels correctly sized.
Assumptions, fears, the option you quietly ruled out, the story you are telling yourself about what you are supposed to want. All of it distorts the analysis that comes after, so it goes first. Often this is the entire job, and people know what to do twenty minutes in.
When the stakes genuinely justify it, Tér walks you through a structured process. You will not be taught it, asked to remember it, or made to do arithmetic. You answer good questions. The structure does the rest, and by the end the answer is usually sitting in the open.
Something is bothering you and you want to think it through properly, with someone who will not rush to reassure you. That is a session, and it works on its own.
This is the part we are proudest of, and the closest thing to working with a human coach over time. Not a longer chat. An arc.
You agree on what you are actually working on, which usually takes longer than people expect and is where most of the value hides. Then it runs over several sessions across weeks. Between them there is something to carry out into your actual life: something to try, something to watch for, a conversation to have. The next session opens with what happened, and the arc adjusts around it.
If you skip the homework, Tér does not scold you. It gets curious about what got in the way, because that is usually the more interesting material.
Real coaching does not happen in the conversation. It happens in the week between two conversations. That is the part an AI can actually be present for.
04 WHY NONE OF IT IS VISIBLE
Coaching methodology is for the coach, not the client. The moment you name a framework, people start performing inside it, giving the answer the model seems to want rather than the true one.
So Tér has no levels, no jargon, no diagrams and no theory homework. It is a black box on purpose, and that is the part competitors find hardest to copy.
05 WHERE TÉR STOPS
Tér is a thinking partner. It is not therapy, not clinical care, and not a substitute for a human coach when one is what you need.
It does not diagnose, it does not treat, and when a conversation moves into territory that belongs with a professional, it says so rather than pressing on. Organisations ask us about this before anything else, and they are right to.
06 WHY AN APP AT ALL
Because the decision rarely arrives when the coach is free. The exec who has a coach sees them monthly, if the calendar holds. The supervisor three levels down does not have one at all, and makes decisions all week that shape how forty people experience their jobs.
Good thinking has been the most rationed resource in corporate development for as long as the industry has existed. That is the part worth changing.
07 WHAT WE DO NOT CLAIM
Credibility is mostly about being precise, so to be precise.
Tér is not endorsed by, affiliated with, or a product of Harvard University. The Harvard connection is straightforward: the research tradition Tér draws on came out of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and our founder trained with the two people most associated with it.
We use the general concepts of the constructive-developmental tradition, which are published and widely taught. We do not use, license or reproduce Immunity to Change, which is the proprietary method of Kegan, Lahey and Minds at Work.
And Tér is an AI. You are talking to a model, always, and it will tell you so.
08 LET'S TALK
If you want to argue with any of this, that is a conversation we enjoy.
